| 36. Victorian Croquet Set |
 |
| Although the origins of Croquet are debatable, there is clear evidence that it has been played in England since the thirteenth century. With the foundation of the university in Cambridge, the first varsity match was played in 1231, making it the oldest varsity sport. 1868 saw the formation of the All England Croquet Club with the purpose of creating an official body to control the game and unify the laws. They needed to find a ground and in 1869 leased four acres in Wimbledon.
This elegant Croquet set comprises of four mallets made from ash with mahogany heads, four beech wood balls, a full set of metal hoops, a start and finish post and a mahogany stand; Circa 1890. We also have the original wooden case. |
